Deeply laden and in pood trim the Federal and Shire Company V liner Norfolk left Lyttelton on" Saturday afternoon for Boston and New York,' the recently inaugurated service between thp dominion and America. The Norfolk’s principal freight was loaded at Australian ports, and owing to the limited time and space available loading operations on these shores were confined to Waitara md Lyttelton. At the former port a fairly large consignment of -frozen meat was shipped; but at‘Lyttelton various lines were taken on board, a large portion of which was brought to the. port by coastal crafts. Although this fs the third trip on the new rout* there is already a steady increase in iha height .coming - forward. The following is- a summary of the cargo .shipped at Lyttelton :—For New 'York— Truss rugs, 100 msea preserved 'meats','Bs4 cases kauri gum, 'tr SICKS gunv 153- sacks peas, 17 racks fescue, ’5-dumps sheepskins, XOO cases rabbits, 255 bales hemp, 7496 carcasos frozen meat, 1297 oUarters beef, 664 casks pelts. CONGESTION AT NEWCASTLE. iMt week f B Australian mail brought news to .the effect that the congestion which has prevailed in Newcastle continually since LasUr Monday, lihd. intermittently from the beginning of the year, has now been overcome temporarily,, and vessels arc enabled to obtain orane berths with very little delay. A. DOOtrast of tho conditions prevailing during ths previous two weeks is afforded in a comparison of the number of days taken to load ttto steamers of about tho samo sire. days later. Last Thursday fortnight the Koromiko entered .the port, and, after waiting for a week for a crane, 'commenced to load 3200 tons of coal. It was. not until nine days later that she was able to make her departure. There are numerous other instances of vossols loading for New Zealand having been considerably delayed. The A. and A, Line's chartered steamer Southport, en route from New Yoik to W elliugton, has been detained at Newcastle xn discharging. It is expected that she will sail for Auckland in the course of a day or two.

Subsequently she will come on to Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. 111 continuation of her voyage from Liverpool to the four principal ports of New Zealand, tho Federal and Shire Company s ■chartered steamer Northern sailed from Durban on Monday. The' vessel is expected in Lyttelton about June 24. Whilst being berthed in Lyttelton on Friday evening the Union Company’s Karanm came in contact with the wharf, with the result that she had her hawse pipe injured. In consequence' of this it will probably be Friday beforo she sails for the West Coast. Mr J. Csblo, chief engineer of the Arahura, has come ashore on holiday. Mr Harvey, second engineer of the Ulimaroa, has rejoined tho vessel, and Mr. Barnes, who was acting second, has gone on holiday leave. The Commonwealth and Dominion Line Fteamer Marere soiled from Nf w York on Mondov last for the four principal ports of New Zealand, via Australia. She is due here about. July 1. . . Tho Commonwealth and Dominion liner Nerchana sailed from Wellington on Saturday afternoon for London, and the following cargo was leaded at the northern pert: 21,351 carcases mutton, 7445 carcases lamb, ] 6.997 legs mutton, 500 quarters beef, 25 bags beef, 692 bales wool, 22 bales skins, 829 casks tallow, 62 barrels tallow, 586 casks pelts, 27 casks lard, 708 oacks pens, 70 barrels hops, 304 casks casings, 79 sacks hides, 5 lengths cable, (ex Devon), and 6 cylinders. The Union Company s collier Rakanoa has been fixed to . load coal at Westport for Fiji and Yavnu/’ Sho will coal H.M.S.
