FIFTY YEARS AGO.
(From the "Lyttelton Times” of Saturday, May 21, 1804.)
Tho steamer Star of the South returned last night from Picton, via Wellington, with over one hundred passengers, nearly all returned diggers from tho Pelorus goldfields. Many express their thorough disgust and disappointment, and furnish the old news flint tho country for digging is limited and those who have got claims are doing well; but the bulk of the community has become little better than a lawless mob, owing to the absence of proper police and other regulations.
Timaru to the Wakamarina.—The rush to tho Pelorus diggings still continues. Numbers of horsemen are constantly going northwards past the Temuka. A great number of pedestrians, furnished with swags, have taken the same route. The intending diggers are mostly of the better class, and seem to be well supplied with stores. Upwards of one hundred men, having severity horses with them, liavo passed along the ru»d during the last fetv days.
