Two men, Patrick Daley, aged sixtyfive, and Alfred Cavr, aged sixty-six, were burned to death in a whare in the Puwera gum-digging camp near Whangnroi yesterday. Daley was seen alive at daylight, when he called at an adjoining whare for matches. The diggers, following the usual custom, wore away from camp all day. On their return, one of their number made the shocking discovery. Both deceased wore lying in an open firepliic::, their bodies being badly charred. A large quantity of liquor was found on the premises. It is surmised that the men, who lived together, had a drinking bout, and, while intoxicated, fell off tho form found in front of the fireplace. There were no signs of any struggle. Peter (rushing into kitchen): "The coffee pot and the kettle's singing, Mary." Mary: "Nothing strange about that." Peter: "But they are singing for a wager." Mary: " Nonsense." Peter: "Hut I can prove it. Marv: f! How?" Peter: " Because the frying pan is in the middle holding tho "teak.''
