MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.

The Avon Bowing Club and Linwood Football Club met in a friendly card and billiard match in the latter a rooms on Tuesday evening. In the billiard match the Linwood Club won by ol points, scoring 554 to 503 made by Avonsido. ' The card match resulted in a draw, each team winning forty games. At the conclusion of the games Mr F. D. Kcsteven, president of the Linwood Football Club, presided, and after tho usual speeches and toasts were given, a programme of music and songs was gone through. Messrs Chadwick, Campbell, Sharratt and Kindsley, of Messrs Fullers' Vaudeville Company, and Robinson and Norrie, contributed items, Mr 0. Nathan being tho pianist. A euchre tournament and dance were held by the Waltham Card and Social Club in Ditford's Hall on May G, and were attended by about eighty couples. The following wero the prize-winners in the euchre tournament: —Gentlemen. Mr W. Ditfort 1, Mr Prince 2; ladies, Miss C. O'Malley 1, Mrs Cockle 2. The booby prizes were won by Mr Niven and Miss Bowden. During the evening songe wero given by Messrs Murchison and B. Doherty, jun. Mr W. Doherty was pianist, and extras wero played .by Mr 11. D. Spence, jun. Court Star of Canterbury Ancient Order of Foresters met on Monday night, Brother C. Higgott, Chief Ranger, in tho chair. Brother J. Wathew spoke regarding Court Star's representation on the District, avid on his motion it was resolved that the Court's congratulations be extended to Brother 0. Jacobson and Brother W. E. Inglis upon their elevation to the office of District Chief Ranger and District Beadle respectively. The Lyttelton Women's Political Club met in the Excelsior Hall on Tuesday evening, Mrs Clark presiding. An address on the referendum was given by Mrs Newall. and at the conclusion questions were invited and were answered. • Tho Loval Perseverance Juvenile Lodge. 1.6.0. F.. M.U.. met on Wednesday when Brother (I. W. Nelson, N.G.. presided over a large attendance, including many visiting brethren. At the conclusion of the business the Lodge adjourned to shoot the first round in a triangular shooting match between the City of Norwich, Volunteer and Perseverance Lodges. During tho evening songs were given by Brothers G. W. Nelson, E. Blunt and B. Cox. and a pianoforte solo was played by Brother A. Moore. At' the Linwood Baptist Church on Sunday the anniversary of. the Christian Endeavour Society was celebrated by special services, which were conducted in the morning by Mr C. W. Francis, and in the evening by Mr L. W. Voller. The servicer, were bright and appropriate and Mr Voller gave a brief outline of the Endeavour movement as instituted by Dr Clarke. On the Monday evening the services were continued by a social gathering. Members of the Linwood Baptist Christian Endeavour Society and delegates from the various senior and junior societies of tho city were present, and the gathering took the form of a model Christian Endeavour meeting. Mi L. W. Voller presided and briefly stated tho aims and ambitions of the Society. A welcome was extended to Mr and Mrs C. R. N. Maclcio upon their return, and appreciation was expressed of the good work done for Christian Endeavour by Mr Mackie. An address was given by Rev A. W. Seotter, president of the Canterbury Christian Endeavour Union. Tho roll call of the societies showed that six senior, two intermediate and nine junior societies wore represented. Mesdames Bain and M'Donald. and Mr Mitchell, a banjo solo by Mr Thomas, and a concertina solo by Master Colin Campbell. Miss Dorothy Ford danced the scauntrcaus and the Highland Fling. The chairman, in referring to Sir Tan Hamilton's visit and tho Society's presentation _to him, paid a compliment to tho band for its services on the occasion of the civic reception, stating that the General had been good enough to express in a veryfriendly way his appreciation of tho welcomo air which was played. Tho evening concluded with a dance.
