A YOU NT. MAN'S SUICIDE
A FAREWELL MESSAGE. [Per Pheiub Association.] DUNEDIN. May 13
"It is better to havo loved and lost than never to havo loved at all." Hugh Stewart, a young Scotchman, who shot himself dead this morning in the. Prince of Wales Hotel, wrote this quotation on the back of a novel and added these words, " Written by mo in full control of my mind.'' The unfortunate man was found dead in a chair in his bedroom this morning about oight o'clock. Ho was shot through the head and on tho floor lay a six-cham-bered revolver with five chambers loaded and ono cartridge discharged. No one in the hotel heard the report of the. shot. Alexander Mart:;;, a .shipmate of the deceased, entered the room and found him sitting in the chair, quite dead. The deceased was fully dVoswed. . Stewart arrived in New Zealand from Scotland about a year 'f;go, and had been employed a.s barman in the Law Courts Hotel, and also in a similar position in an hotel at Jtiverton. He camo up to Dunedin or. Monday and put up at tho Prince of Wales Hotel. He should have returned to Riverton yesterday but did not do so. It is stated that ho was fond of a maid at the Gridiron Hotel, but that his love was unrequited. The deceased left another quotation: " I have been weighed in flic balance and found wanting." He also left two sealed letters, ono to his last employer and ono to the young lady who is said to have been the object of his affection. In tho note ho left ho requested that this young lady sliould be. made acquainted with his death. Stewart was twenty-four years of age and a single man.
The evidence at the inquest showed that the deceased appeared to be in good spirits yesterday. He bought a revolver at a pawnshop and informed a friend that lie just wanted it for a bit of sport, Constable Sorrell said he had interviewed the young lady referred to, who said she had informed Stewart some time ago that she could never marry him, on account of tho difference in their religious beliefs.
The Coroner returned a. verdict that tho deceased.died from the effects of a gunshot wound self-inflicted whilst in a state of temporary insanity.
