PACIFIC DEFENCE.
VIEWS OF MR A. ,M. MYERS. 5y Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received May 12, 8.40’ p.m.) VANCOUVER, May 11. Mr A. M. Myers, member for Auckland East, in an interview, said he was glad to recognise that the Imperial spirit was growing in Canada equally with New Zealand. Tho vital question for consideration now was a defence in the Pacific. The time for definite action had arrived . and the foundations ought now to be laid for future policing of the Pacific. Canada, Australia and New Zealand ought to unite for this purpose. While fully recognising their indebtedness to the British Navy he felt that the time had arrived when the dominions ought to share more of the burdens of Empire. It was unpleasant- to think that New Zealand’s existence depended on a friendly treaty with Japan. The creation of even the nucleus of a .navy at the present time was a step in the right direction. If the Empire ever fell apart it would be clue to lack of sympathy and lack of imagination, caused by lack of knowledge. An interchange of visits of the people’s representatives throughout the Empire was eminently desirable.
