SOCIAL DEMOCRAT PLANS. MULL NOMINATE CANDIDATE. At a general meeting of tlio branches of the Social Democratic Party in Christchurch on Saturday, at the Socialist Hall, there were about 100 people present, and Mr W. Ricketts was elected chairman. The following organisations wero represented Tailoring Trade Union, Bootmakers’ Union, Printers’ Machinists’ Union, Tinsmiths’ Union, Grocers’ Assistants’ Union, Timber Yard Workers’ Union, Fabian Society, Church Socialists’ League, Passive" Resisters’ Party, and all the branches of the party. A meeting of the District Council, hold just prior to the general meeting, had rescinded the resolution to the effect .that the party should not contest the mayoral election, and at the general meeting Mr F. Cooke moved, and Mr 0. Little seconded the motion—- ' • That this meeting take the necessary steps to contest the mayoral election.” After some discussion the motion was carried unanimously. Requisition forms wore distributed, and it was stated that 1000 signatures wero required to nominate a candidate. A meeting will be bold this week to go further into details.
