FIFTY YEARS AGO.
(From the "I.vtielton Times'' of ' Thursday, -March 24. 18(54.) Canterbury is really got ting quite civilised. On Monday evening, in addition to tho cabs ordinarily plying for hire in tho city, we noticed a Hansom cab, drawn up in front of tho theatre. Some frogs the first imported into the province, arrived in the Lady Itemson, and were sent by order of Major Hornbrook. Thoy were shipped in the condition of tadpoles, but arrived at maturity during tho voyage. They have been placed in. sonic ponds m Mount Pleasant. Kaiapoi Races.- -Yesterday the above races came oft', and as regards weather tho day was all that could be desired. But notwithstanding ibis inducement the. attendance was not qnito so large as was anticipated. Wo may presume that this is to bo accounted for from the fact of Ihe unpopularity of these races and also to the backward state of tho arrangements connected therewith. At present the course is in a very bad condition. . . . Tho first race, tho' Maiden Plate, was advertised to come off at noon, but it was past one o'clock before tho horse* made their appearance.
