SENSATION IN COURT.

COUNSEL THROWS UP BRIEF.

EX-CONTICT AND BARONESS

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.

LONDON, March 4,

Hugh Dalrymple, ex-convict, and the Baroness von Goetz, a wealthy, philarn. thropist and the organiser of a farm for discharged prisoners, were the, parties in an interesting Court case. Dalrymple alleged that he had loaned the baroness money, and produced scores of letters from the baroness containing terms of endearment. A sensational cross-examination by counsel proved that Dalrymple had been convicted of frauds on women in 1896.

In order to explain discrepancies in the letters Dalrymple alleged that his twin brother was responsible for them. Dalrymple’s counsel threw up his brief, and a verdict was returned for the defendant.

The judge impounded 100 letters, which were obvious forgeries. Evidence was given that the baroness had £40,000 in the bank at the time of the blackmailing.
