AUCKLAND. March 5.

( The T.ilune Wings a report, that the outlying islands of the • Cook (jroup were sw6pt : by a' hurricane in the second week in January. The hurricane swept the pearlshell atolls to the north of.the Cook Group, and caused mountainous seas to swamp Rakalianga and Manshiki ■ The natives were compelled .to take to their boats until the storm subsided. Considerable damage was done to crops. The islands which lie very low were completely- submerged. ", ' " : Aitutaki Island was in the track of the storm, but sustained. less damage than the others. . ' The storm arose suddenly, and after .passing over the- islands to the north, spent itself on the Cook Islands. * An unnamed schooner, known to be in the vicinity at the time of the hurricane has not . since been leported, and it’ is feared that she went down.
