MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES
The Philipson Tent, 1.0. R., met on Thursday evening in the Hastings Street Hall, Sydenham. There was a large attendance, including a number of officers and members of the “ Ark of Refuge ” Tent, St Albans. The programme consisted of music and cards,' and a most enjoyable evening was spent. During the evening, the C.R., Sister.. M. Ranger, presented Brother A. Saunders with a P.C.R. apron, in recognition of his terra of office. Musical and elocutionary items were contributed by Messrs T. Reynolds, A. D. Hassall and F. A. Judkins, and the Misses "Williams. Before closing the C.R., Brother A. Richards, thanked the members .on behalf of the visitors, for the evening’s entertainment. The quarterly summoned meeting of the TJ.A.O.D. Oak of Sydenham Ledge was held in the Friendly Societies’ Hall, Hazelclean Road, last week, A.l). Brother Nickerson presiding. A.D. Brother Nickerson was elected as delegate to the Friendly. Societies’ dispensary. A social evening was then held. Past District Grand Pro. Brother J. Fisher made a presentation of a Past Secretary’s Collar to Secretary Brother E. Cameron, who suitably responded. Songs and recitations were given by Brothers Harding, Edmond, Campbell, Ayres, -J. Betts and Warner. B The Pride of Christchurch Tent, 1.0. R., met for its usual fortnightly meeting on Monday, March 2, Brother Morrison, C.lt., being in the chair. A challenge was received from the Philipson Tent to a debate on Thursday; March 16. -the subject selected being. “ Which is the greater evil—drinking or gambling.” Brothers C. H. H. Taylor and F. Robson were chosen to represent the Tent. The secretary reported that the District Secretary, Brother Fathers, would be in Christchurch on Friday. March 6. A united meeting would be held on that evening to receive him. - Brother Iloskmgs, C.R., of the Addington Tent, addressed the members on the work of the Addington Tent.
The members of the Court Thistle of the Forest, A.0.F.. met in the Hall, Hazel dean Road, on Tuesday evening. A'sister Lodge wrote asking the members to 00-ooerate with it in asking the Dispensary Beard to establish a' branch in Sydenham. The secretary was instructed to reply that the members were of the opinion that the proposal was premature. The delegates to the annual meeting of the Dispensary Board reported on the proposals put forward to extend the usefulness of the institution. , The report was approved. P.C:R., Brother W. R. Haig, tendered his resignation as n trustee of the Court, in consequence of removing to Whangarei. Many of the brethren congratulated Brother Haig on his promotion, and spoke of the „ good work done hv him both in the early days of the Court's history and as a trustee. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to him for past services, accompanied hv Foresters’ Fire. The receipts for the evening amounted to £27 15s Id.
