AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE.

The committee of the Canterbury Automobile Association met at the Association’s rooms last evening. Dr W. H. Simpson (president) occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance of members.

The following new members were elected: Messrs D. V. Grant, H. E. Peryman, A. W. M’Connell, G. Adams, P. Wynn-Williams and Dr A. . Sandstein.

Mr A. Goodwin .(Pigeon Bay) wrote offering to entertain trial competitors at morning tea if a halt could be made at Pigeon Bay. .It. was decided to reply thanking Mr Goodwin for his kind-offer, and regretting that it was now too late to alter the trial arrangements. Tlio Marlborough Automobile Association wrote suggesting a demonstration run over the Katkoura road at Easter, and a conference at Kaikoura, with a view to bringing necessary improvements to the road prominently before the public. It was decided to reply that the Association had already made arrangements covering Easter, but, would be prepared to consider another date. . Mr J. Norris (Mount Guardian) wrote stating that he was continually being annoyed by requests for assistance from motorists whoso cars got stuck in the Conway River. He broke his buggy pulling one car out, and could get no compensation for the damage. He had now raised the pnee for his assistance from £1 to 30s. It was decided to reply .advising Mr Norrie that the. motorists who failed to pay were not members of the Association.

Mr W. A. White (New Brighton) wrote stating that he had been fined for driving his car over twelve miles an hour in the Waimairi County Council’s district. The Council’s by-law, it was contended, was ultra vires, and lie asked if tile Association would pay the costs of an appeal. Mr F. W. Johnston said he did not think the by-law could bo held to be ultra vires. It might be unreasonable, but not unreasonable enough to upset. Action- in the matter was deferred pending receipt of further information from Mr White’s solicitor; ■ It was decided to grant- a bonus of £2 2s to the caretaker of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s ground for his services in connection with the recent gymkhana. It was decided to circulate information regarding the new traffic regulations in the city.
