CIVIL SERVANT’S THEFTS.

Arthur Richards, a young man, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court on two charges of stealing £1 7s sd, the property of the Labour Department, and 11s, tlio property of the Government. Mr Macassey, for the Labour Department, stated that the total amount of 'the moneys received by the defendant and unaccounted for from September 13, 1913, to January 26, 1914, was £92' 9s 6d, but full restitution had . since been made. Accused had been in the Labour Department for three years and had hitherto borne a good character. The Department did not press for severe sentence. ~ •
'On the first charge accused was fined £5 or twenty-one days, and on the second' he was convicted and ordered to appear for sentence when ciilldd upon.
