MARKET REPORTS. GRAIN AND PRODUCE. CHRISTCHURCH, December 23. Business for some time has been of such small volume that tho approach of tho Christmas holidays could make but little difference, and consequently tho amount of trade is very much on the same plane as it was a month or six weeks *ago. Transactions in grain and produco are very few, and as far as farmers are concerned, practically nothing is doing. Wheat continues firm, although littlo is passing. Judging by the statistics just issued by tho Government, it would appear that unless the coming wheat harvest is above tho average the yield will bo insufficient for dominion requirements, and on present indications the prospect of the dominion being able to export any grain seems highly improbable. Oats aro at present in weak demand. The following quotations aro for purchases from farmers, net cash, sacks extra, delivered at country stations : "Wheat—Tuscan 3s 5d to 3s 6d, Hunter's 8s 8d to 3s 9d, Pearl 3s 9d to 3s IW. Oats—Gartons 2s Id to 2s 2d, Duns Is »0d to 2s Id, Danish Is 9d to 2s 2d, Algerian Is lid to 2s Id. Barley—Malting 8s Cd to 8s Sd per bushel, according to quality. Partridge Peas—3s 4d to 3i 6d. Chaff—Jß!i 10s to £S 355. Flour—£9 per ton, 1001 b bags £9 10s, 601 b bags £9 153, 2alb bags £lO. Bran—Local Si Co, f.o.b. £i. Pollard—£6 per ton.

The Christmas market at tho Rangiora yards yesterday was a large and busy" one, tho attendance being much above tho average. There was an ontrv of 1500 sheep, of which 150 wore fat- 100 cattle and 150 pigs. Fat wethers made 19s to 28s. fat ewes 16s 6d to 19s, unshorn ewes 235, fat lambs 17s to 19s 6d, ewes and lambs, all counted, 14s, four and sis-tooth weth-

ers 17s 6d, two-tooth ewes 14s to 15s 6d. Cattle.—Fat .steers £7 to £8 10s, fat cows £6 10s to £B, eighteen months to two-year-old cattle £3 10s, calves 15s, springers £7 10s to £9. Pigs.— Baconers 53s to 70s, porkers 35s to 38s, stores 25s to 275, small pigs 13s to 20s. In the produce yards heavy half-bred sheep skins made 8s 3d, medium 6s 6d, lighter 5s 6cl, merino skins 6s 6d, pelts Is fid, calf skins 2s Gd, hides bid, fkece wool BJd, crutchings 41d, fat lid, horsehair Is.. BURNSIDE. [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, December 23. Fat cattle—l3o were yarded. Though the yarding was small tho demand was slack. Prices opened on a par with those ruling last week, but as tho sale advanced there was a downward tendency, and taken all over prices were down about 10s per head. Prime bullocks £l2 to £l3, extra to £l4 2s Gd, medium £lO 10s to £ll 10s, others to £9 15s, prime heifers and cows £8 to £9 15s, extra to £l3 12s 6d, medium £6 to £7 10s. Fat sheen —llss were penned. Tho supply was" short, and although there is never much mutton wanted during Christmas week, tho demand then being, mainly for lamb, there was a better inquiry than was expected. Prices were about Is lower than those ruling last week. Prime shorn wethers 23s to 255, extra to 26s 6d, medium 20s to 225, light and unfinished to 19s, woolly wethers to 35s 3d, heavy shorn ewes 22s 6d to 24s 6d, extra to 26s 3d, medium 18s 6d to 21s, light and unfinished 13s to 16s. Fat lambs—There was a big yarding, 228 D being penned. Several butchers had purchased privately to mako provision against a short market, and in consequence the yarding was much in exces3 of requirements. On the average prices showed a reduction of 2s per head on last week's rates, while

at times sales were very hard to effect. Taken all over quality was good. Prime 17s 6rl to 19s, extra to 21s 9d, medium 14s 6cl to 16s, light and unfinished lis to 13s. Pigs—4s fat pigs and 88 stores were yarded. Bidding was indifferent and prices showed a fall compared with last week's rates.
