TEMPERANCE ESSAY COMPETITION.
\ THE PRIZE WINNEBS. The "Women's Christian Temperance Union otfered prizes recently for the best essays written by the boys and crirls attending the secondary schools of Christchurch, and also by the boys and girls of the fourth., fifth and sixth standards of tho primary schools ot Christchurch and suburbs. The subject matter of the essays was to bo taken from the wall-sheets supplied by the Education Department. The prizo list is as follows: Secondary Schools Girls: Hilda Wicks (West Christchurch District High School) 1. Boys: Joseph Meek (West Christchurch District High School) 1. Honourable mention : Frank Cooper, Y. S. Rule, G. Lockwood, A. Goodchild, L. Denny, K. Thompson, "Winnie Penborthy, Ivy Hare and S. It. dimming. Primary Schools Standard VI.: Girls, Lizzie Green (St Albans School) and E. Bellwood (St Albans ' School) equal 1:: boys, Spencer Clarke (Addintfton) 1.
