LOST AT SEA.

QUARTERMASTER DISAPPEARS

A MONOWAI MYSTERY

On thoMonowai's arrival at Wellington on Thursday afternoon it was reported that tho ship's quartermaster, John M'Kechnie, had been missing since early morning, when tho vessel was en route from Lyttelton to Wellington. Those on board were able to trace tho quartermaster's movements up to 4.45 a.m., since when nothing has been seen of him. At about 4 a.m. he too!: a cup of coffee to the chief officer (Mr J. Scott), who was on the bridge, lie then temporarily relieved the man at the wheel and afterwards relieved the man on the look-out for some time. Tho look-out man last saw him at about 4.45 a.m. attending to some crockery. Tho quartermaster was missed "at 6 a.m. Despite a thorough search of the vessel nothing "has silica been seen of him, and it is presumed that he fell overboard. M'Kechnie was a single man, aged twenty-eight, and a native of Scotland. Ho had been in New Zealand since 1908, and had served on the Monowai for the last eighteen months. His relatives in New Zealand are an. uncle, n brother, and a sister, who live at Dunedin.
