D SQUADRON FIRST ArOUNTED RIFLES. CAArP AT WAIPARA. Tlio D Squadron First Alountcd Rifles (C.Y.C.) wont into camp at Waipava on Saturday for eight days’ training. Tlio officers and men in camp * orra a force of seventy-five. Alnjor P. J. Overton is in command and the other officers are Lieutenants L. R, Alacfarluno and D. T. Wood; Captain A. IV. At’Arthur Onslow, brigade major and instructor in mounted duties; and Ad-jutant-Captain D. B. Blair. A wellsheltered spot for the camp "' as provided in tlio Glonmark Estate by tho manager. Air T. S. Johnston, and tlio surrounding country is specially well suited for the exercising of mounted troops. All the camp arrangements are excellent, and the farmers :n North Canterbury have proved their interest in the defence movement by providing the whole of the fodder for the horses. Tho men spent Saturday afternoon and evening in putting the camp in order. On Sunday the squadron attended service at the Aloore Afemorial Church, when the Rev Canon Purchns preached an appropriate sermon. On Monday and again yesterday tho men were put through a course of musketry instruction and dismounted drill. To-day mounted drill will be the order for the morning, and advance and rearguard operations in the afternoon. A route march is to bo taken to-morrow to tho Hurunui River and back, a distance of about thirty-five miles. On Friday manoeuvres to test the officers and men in field operations will bo carried out, the 0.0. D. and Colonel Chaffey being expected to be present. During the camp there will ho shooting on tho TVaipnra, range for a number of trophies that are fired for annually, and the camp snorts will he held on Saturday.
