WORK AND WAGES.

BROKEN HILL STRIKE.

STONE-THROWERS AT WORK. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. BROKEN HILL, September 29. The situation in the shop assistants' strike is unaltered.

A large crowd hooted the female employees at Pellewand and Moore's drapery shop when they were leaving, and a few stones were thrown, breaking a fanlight, while one big plateglass window was cracked. There were no arrests.

CANADIAN TRADES CONGRESS. " limes."—Sydney ""Sua" Special Cables. (Received September 29, 7.30 p.m.) OTTAWA, September 28. The Canadian Trados Congress passed a resolution of unionists joining the Militia and rejected a proposal to organise a political Labour Party.

CARPENTERS AND JOINERS. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, September 29. The Conciliation Council was occupied to-day with the claims of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners for a new award. Applications for exemption were made by the Union Steam Ship Company, Wellington Gas Company, Wellington Woollen Company, and Wellington Harbour Board. After an all-day consideration the main points, such as wages, hours, holidays, preference of employment, overtime and apprentices could not be agreed upon. The position so far as the men are concerned is that they are endeavouring to obtain a dominion award, and the local employers hold that they cannot commit themselves to any definite decision without giving consideration to other parts of the dominion.

It was finally decided that the Council would adjourn until some date towards the end of November. In the meantime the contractors and builders of the dominion will meet in conference at Wanganui some time at the beginning of November. Both parties will be asked io meet at Wanganui some time prior to tho conference to discuss the main points, and their decision will be final and binding on both parties. The result of their deliberations will be forwarded to the Court, with a view to making an award applicable to the whole of tho dominion. It is recommended that each party nominate seven representatives, with an independent chairman. Those matters of a purely local character in each district can afterwards bo adjusted by tho parties concerned in those districts. This is practically the recommendation of the Council. The Commissioner (Mr P. Hally) has been requested to give effect to the recommendation of the Council, but whether or not it will bo acted upon is a matter for the parties themselves.

WEST COAST COLLIERS. [From Otjr Correspondent.] GREYMOUTH. September 30. The Millerton correspondent of tho Westport "Times" writes: "The agreement drawn up last week between the representatives of the Granity Union and the Westport Coal Company was submitted to the men on Sunday last, and was unanimously agreed to. I understand, that both tho Stockton and Denniston Unions have done with their agreement what the House of Lords did with the Homo Rule Bill—thrown it out. In tho agreement arrived at between tho looal Union and the employers, there is no appreciable departure from the settlement agreed on twelve months ago, and the only increase of any magnitude is that the time for the duration of the agreement has been extended an extra twelve months and the one at present suggested will consequently remain in vogue for two years instead of one as heretofore."

TANNERS AND FELLMONGERS. [Per Press Association.] INYERCARGILL, September 29. The Southland Tanners and Fellmongers' Union has decided not to affiliate with either the United Federation of Labour or the Social Democratic Party.
