DELIVERY OF MAILS.
A CORRESPONDENT'S GRIEVANCE.
REPLY BY POSTMASTERGENERAL.
i The Hou R. H. Rhodes, PostmasterGeneral, in an interview with a " Lyttelton Times" representative yesterday, made a statement regarding the late mail delivery grievance which has been ventilated in the correspondence column of the " Lyfctelton Times." On September 25 a correspondent stated that the cause of the late delivery of mails lay in the fact that the postmen had been deprived of their bicycles. Mr Rhodes in replv stated that the us© of bicycles retarded the letter-car-riers on their rounds in the congested business centres. It was obvious that when an officer had to call at practically every door (which was the case on the rounds affected) the use of a bicycle would interfere with, rather than help, him. Economy did not enter into the question at all. Efficiency was the chief consideration, and it was worthy of note that the health of the officers concerned had uniformly improved since the bicycles were relinquished.
