FIRES.
RAILWAY MATERIAL DESTROYED By Telegraph—l’ross Association —Copyright. SYDNEY", August 23. A fire destroyed a large portion the works of Ritchie Brothers, railway rolling stock manufacturers, at ■ Auburn, also six newly-completed railway carriages. The damage is estimated at over £20,000. (Received August 25, 12.20 a.m.)v ■ SYDNEY, August 24. A later estimate of tho damage is £35,000. Eight carriages were des- -y troyed. [Pep. Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, August 24. A firo occurred at 9.30 a.m. to-day in a bootshop in Dee Street, owned and occupied by Mr John M’Curdy. An addition was being made to tho building, and bags of lime had been left near a wall. Heavy rain fell during the night and water fell on the lime, which caused the outbreak. Tho building was seriously damaged and tho stock suffered considerably from heat and smoke. The insurances on the stock were £I4OO in the South British office, £BOO in the New Zealand office, and £2OO in the United office. The building was insured in the South British office for £450 and in the Alliance. ,< ' Liverpool and London and Globe, and Standard offices for £225 each. n
