NEW BRIGHTON ROTES.

Colonel Cooper will visit New Brighton to-morrow evening to inspect the J Company of Territorials. The New Brighton Borough Council has decided to extend the south esplanade for 16ft, to protect the front with a deep batter of day, and to raise the protecting fence to a sufficient height to provide protection for sitters on the inside seats. The increased accommodation provided will bo appreciated during the band season, and the closer approximation to the sea will be enjoyed by visitors. The Captain Owles safety bathing area is tho designation of the latest scheme for safe bathing for women and children. Tho area at present under consideration is marked at 200vds from the pier north. Anchored buoys at the extreme ends and in the centre are roped securely to tho shore end and between, held in placo by smaller floating buoys. Tlie whole will provide an area practically as safe as ono can liopo to get on tho open beach. Tho scheme will not cost the Council anything. It is anticipated by the originator that the whole of the money required can ho obtained by donations. ThoTaying of the buoys will lie done at tho lowest possible figure by a friendly steamboat owner—fuel and labour being tho only expenses. Air J. Alason, one of the pioneers of tho New Brighton Fire Brigade, and its chief enthusiast in competitions during its existence, has been appointed superintendent in tho place of Air E. Gale, resigned. A meeting which was largely attended by young men, was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening, the Alayor (Air C. IT. Winny) presiding. The meeting tho chairman explained, had been specially called by the Sports Ground Committee with a view to rekindling interest in tho question of making some attempt to complete a portion of tho sports ground for use during the summer season. The present intention is to provide sufficient ground of a. solid character for a cricket field.' Air G. AV. Bishop advocated tho formation of working “bees” oil Saturday afternoons, under the supervision of Air Ryan, tlie Council’s foreman. There was a ready response to the proposal. Air J. Alason, on behalf of tho Hockey Club, reported the club’s willingness to play a fancy dress match, Alarried v. Single, and in every way possiblo to assist the work. A proposal to run a concert emanated from Air L. Bishop, representing the footballers. On behalf of the band, Mr Ellis, the secrotary, reported its intention at an early date to give an open-air programme to assist the funds, and it would also attend and play for the fancy dress hockey match. Air Beaumont advocated a visit to the grounds on Saturday with a view to a proper organisation of the working gangs. On the resolution of Air A. P. Hopkins, it was decided to commence work on tho Saturday afternoon. Tho following, who were present were added to the . committee:—Rev IT. Alathias, and Alessrs C. Israelson, W. Bellamy, J. Rvan, J. Alason, AY. Ellis, C. Al’Cree, R. Hopkins, P. O. Lucas, AA r . Cooper, J. Hillgrove, J. S. Radcliffe, J. Ives, J. Hayne, L. Bishop, AV. Campbell, J. Tolpitt, C. Lester, P. Beaumont, E. Colenso, N. Jarvis, H. Barnes and R. Betts. Tho offer of Air T. Lester, jn n., to supply a +eam for removing sand was accepted with hearty thanks.

The New Brighton motor-boat fleet will at the commencement of the season be at least ten boats stronger than at tho conclusion of last year. .Buildring is being carried on industriously and'the club is enthusiastic at the promise of the new season. A special meeting of the committee of tho New Brighton Alotor-boat and Sailing-Club was held on August 16, ’ Air C. IT. Winny presiding. The championship flag won by the Ariki (Dovereaux and Simes), and given by Air T. Carter, was presented to the secretary for Alessrs Dovereaux and Simes. Tlie chairman referred to the weed nuisance in the river at certain periods of tho year and especially to the serious inconvenience suffered by tho club last season. .He urged that a deputation should wait on the Drainage Board on tho matter, and that at the same time those responsible should be asked to clear the weeds from the swamp on the other side of the tram bridge. The Harbour Board, Drainago Board and the Heathcote County Council sliogld he approached and the urgency of the need emphasised. The secretary, on a resolution, was requested to take tho necessary steps to arrange with the authorities to receive a deputation.
