EASTER WEATHER.
A STATE OF UNCERTAINTY.
MR BATES PESSIMISTIC. [Fb®m Our Corrbspokdent.] WELLINGTON, March 19,
The Government Meteorologist, Mr Bates, though never a Job’s comforter if he can avoid it, is not dispensing cheerful and confident forecasts about weather conditions over tho holidays. He was asked by a representative of the “Lyttelton Times” to make a long-range forocast for tho benefit of holiday makers. Sometimes conditions are so well settled that this can bo done a week ahead, but Mr Bates shook his head over tho present condition of temperatures and barometrical pressures. . “ Things are so uncertain to tho north of Now Zealand and to tho westward that we cannot be confident of a fine holiday,” he' said. “I am watching developments both north and south. These possible storm centres may neutralise each other, but wo may easily get bad weather between them. _ A low pressure area is due t-o pass in the south on Friday, and this is not a good Tlr Bates added as a consolation that New Zealand had avoided the big storms which had caused such havoo 'in Australia this week and it had a similar escape oni March 0, when he published the Fact that a big disturbance wa3 brewing in lasman Sea. Tt might have gone either way Mid Mr Bates, but New Zealand had the good luck that time.
