OPENING OF THE S'EASON.

/ The Christchurch Chess Club, which last bight.inaugurated its winter season with an jpen evening, has been in existence for thirtyfour years. There was a good attendance of both club members and visitors, and an enloyable match, between eidos picked by the president and the vice-president of the dub, was played. The'officers of the club this vear uro:—President, Mr E. H. Severne; vice-presidents, Messrs H. J. Nightingale and R. A. Joseph; honorary treasurer, Mr H. Kennedy; honorary secretary, Mr B. Lovell-Smith. Prior to the commencement of the match the president welcomed the visitors, and said he was glad to be able to announce that a telegraph match, ton men a side, had been arranged with the Wellington Chess Club The competition would be. played on the evenings of March 29 and April 6, and players interested were -invited to be present. Then » chess column would appear every Saturday evening m the "Star," and it was hoped that it would prove of great interest to aIL players.
