OPENING OF THE S'EASON.

/ The Christchurch Chess Club, which last bight.inaugurated its winter season with an jpen evening, has been in existence for thirtyfour years. There was a good attendance of both club members and visitors, and an enloyable match, between eidos picked by the president and the vice-president of the dub, was played. Prior to the commencement of the match the president welcomed the visitors, and said he was glad to be able to announce that a telegraph match, ton men a side, had been arranged with the Wellington Chess Club The competition would be. played on the evenings of March 29 and April 6, and players interested were -invited to be present.
