"' TJIE FALL IN WHEAT FREIGHTS V • WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN. ; Although inability to get wheat to the seaboard from the country, and the industrial '■ 'wrest amongst the workers, are both playing havoo with the shipping of wheat from Sydney, the situation as regards freight rates, more especially sailing vessels, is such all over the Commonwealth that shipowners are beginning to discern some good in the busi- ' pess out of Newcastle again, and contequent- . ly are more liable to accept a charter now than th«y war* a tow weeks ago, which ao-

counts for tonnage beiag beaded there from other Stages, perhaps even moTe freely than from ' Sydney, which has the- first-named troubles to combat. The latest vessel to be takon up for Newcastle loading—that at one time was almost a certainty fer a -reheat cargo—is tho barque Surnbawa, which will in all probability go to the West Coast. She was offering for tho conveyance of eoreals for some time, but after 37b and 38s engagements mado up to as recently as a week er two ago, 4s and 5a less was regarded as unsatisfactory; he-nco the Newcastle charter, at a, good rate, proved the more acceptable. The ship Forth, now at'Sydney, is another ves-el that circumstances may force te Newcastle too, and besides her there are others also. The care ef the Forth, however, illustrates the situation as well as the best of -them, and what to do with her to tho best and most profitable advantage must indeed be a puzrle to the owners. Whilst bound to Newcastle and Sydney from the Baltic 'wheat charters offered freely, rates at tho time being as high as 375, or perhaps a shade - hijher. Unfortunately for themselves the owners did not do business, preferring to await a further upward move. This did not "eventuate at any rate to the extent they desired, ar.d seems mere unlikely to than ever how, so the Forth is a ' free " phip, with freights in the vicinity of 335. What will bo done with her irf the end is very hard to say, but the chances certainly seem that unless the unexpected happens and better whoat freights offer, the owners will have to place her at present rates and' have her loading alongside a vessel fixed at tiro profitable rate they once turned aside, or. do as is being done with the Surabawa and some other vessels now on the list of " Expected at Newcastle."
