GRASS FIRES AT TTMA.RU. [Pas Press Association. 3 ' TIMARU, January 14. The hottest day of the season was experienced 'to-day, caused by a nor'west wind, half a gale at times. Within the post ofliqjf) 92 degrees was recorded, and 95 aogrecs in the shade outside. Much vegetation was and scorched. Two or three trass fires were reported, but no damage was done. Ouo outbreak was in the backyard of a big drapery shojp., and another threatened the railway bridge at Washdyke. A scorching nor'-wester is blowing, and a fire in Rogerson Valley Bush is throwing dense smoke over the township, adding to the general unpleasantness. ASHBURTON, January 14. A heavy north-west wind sprang up about eight o'clock this morning, enveloping tho wholo county in dust clouds. The heat was intense. It is feared that a large area of late autumn sown oats now in a ripe stage will be somewhat shaken. DUNEDIN, January 14. The weather was oppressive *n Dunedin to-day.
