SPREYDON RECREATION GROUND

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Your correspondent "Trust the People" is not very particular about his facts. The two promoters of last Tuosday's meeting are prepared to give £lO to any local charity if your correspondent can prove that either of them circulated a rumour to tho effect that tho Council had purchased tho block of land. Why. it is ridiculous to suggest such a thing, seeing tls meeting was called to protest against a loan poll for such a purchase. Mr Whiting never hinted at such a rumour and won't thank your correspondent for putting words into his mouth he never uttered. What are the facts? The Council called threo meetings, and tho Mayor laid it down that tho majority of votes cast at those threo meetings would decide the question. Tho majority against tho proposal was overwhelming. What were these meetings called for? If the Council take a poll now, then these meetings were a farce, a waste of money, and put tho Mayor in a ridiculous position.—We are, etc., PROMOTERS PROTEST MEETING.
