NAVY LEAGUE.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE,

A meeting of the local committee of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League was held last night; presentProlessor Blunt (chairman), Mesdames T. G. It. Biunt, R. Hennah, 0. J. Cooper, ' F. Robinson, LieutenantColonels Cresswell and Richardson, Major Anderson, and Messrs T. H. Foster, J. J. Donga 11 and C. J. Treleaven (honorary secretary). Letters were received from Westport regarding the opening of a branch of the League there. The secretary of the League,' London, wrote, expressing appreciation of the work being done in Canterbury. The secretary was instructed to write to Captain Stopford, of H.M.S. Pyramis, with a view to ascertaining when H.M.S. New Zealand would arrive in the dominion, so that steps could bo takc-n to ensure the success of the ship’s visit to Lyttelton. The secretary was also authorised to issue a circular letter to a.ll members, stating that subscription lists had been opened by the Timaru centre, in order to present the battleship with a regulation ensign and Union Jack, in silk, on her arrival. A statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the late bazaar was presented. Tt showed that to date the receipts totalled £J!)2S 3s Id and t!;e expenditure,. LGOt 19s lOd, leaving a credit balance of £1323 3s 3d. All accounts in. connection with the bazaar were passed for payment. It was debided that the drawing for prizes in the Navy League art unions

should take place tvt the office of the League on Friday, January 2d, at 8 p.m. A very hearty vote of thanks was passed to all who had helped with the bazaar and art unions. A discussion took place as to New Zealand’s position with regard to the naval defence of the Pacific and it was decided to further discuss the matter at the committee meeting to be held next month, with a view to a publio meeting being called.
