SOUTH AGAIN.

Tub return of CoinmnndGr Evans, who has paid a visit to the Mother Country during the winter, is a reminder that tho Terra Noia will leave Lyttelton shortly for the Far South in order to bring the members of the British Antarctic expedition back to civilisation. Captain Scott may be assumed to have returned to his winter quarters, after reaching the South Pole, some time in March, and he and his companions would then, settle down to endure the months of polar darkness with as much comfort as might be. Tho party that was left on tho coast to tho south of Capo Adare would bo guided by the condition of the ice in choosing between the erection of a winter camp for themselves and a journey, rather dangerous as well as difficult, to the hut in M’Murdo Sound. With tho return of the spring Captain Scott would have arranged for additional exploration and scientific work, and it is probable that by this time sledging parties have been despatched from ‘ tho winter quarters. A very attractive journey from the point of view of tho’ eager explorer could be made eastward across the Great Ice Barrier to King Edward YU. Land. A repetition of Captain Scott’s march of nine years ago to the interior of Victoria Land would be of great value to ecience, and it might bo thought worth while to send a party back along the southern trail to gather geological specimens among the mountains. Wo may be sure that Captain Scott will mako good use of the summer that is at his disposal before hp embarks on the Terra Nova for tho return voyage to Lyttelton.
