THE CONTRACT SYSTEM.

CO-OPERATIVE WORKERS IN PROTEST. [Fkoif Orv. CoanEsro.vTUENT.l WELLINGTON, October 14. A numerously-signed protest of cooperative workers presented the .following appeal to the House to-night through the member for the Bay oi Plenty, Mr MacDonald:—" We, as cooperative workers and dependents residing on tho Gisborne-Motu section oi tho east coast Main Trunk railway works, view with alarm tho suggested abolition of the co-operative contract system in the construction of the public works, and tho rcintroduction of the old contract style. Although a number of years have' elapsed since the introduction of the present system, the many evils of tho old contracts are still fresh in the memory of tho workers, and we honestly feel that the present system, if prooerly carried out, is the best and fairest for the workers generally, as well as being satisfactory to tho State. Wc, therefore, placo before Parliament this our earnest, humble protest e gainst the abolition of the co-opera-tive contract system.'"
