TAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL.
TO TIIK EDITOR. Sir, —-'As a ratepayer of the Tawer* Countv Council T feel it incumbent on / myself to enter an earnest protest against the action of that- Council,in proposing to construct an expensive bridge acros the Ivowai River without first consulting the ratepayers. This bridge, which will be of bsneiit to but a few of the ratepayers of the county, but will benefit considerably one individual. who. by the way, is an influential member of the Council, will cost some* thing in the vicinity of £2OOO. Now I maintain that it is the duty of the Council, before proceeding with a work of this magnitude, to test the feeling of the ratepayers by taking a poll. Rub in this case nothing has been done for the simple reason that the Council knows the ratepayers would afci entertain the -proposition for a single moment. With an ardour worthy of a better cause, tins Council has compelled ratepayers to clean unused reads that lead to nowhere in the hills, but has neglected to keep in repair the bridges on the well-used roads, wfai the result that, several of these bridges are unfit for hcavv traffic, and lijve noticeboards ill) to that effect. There are also appeals from the back country for roads, but these appeals go unheard. 7t is time the ratepavers of the Tawera County shook off their apathy and banded themselves together'in order to secure (.lie return cf only the best men to the Council. —T am. efo.. ♦RATEPAYER.
