MEMORIAL TO THE ENGINEERS. m SENATOR SMITH APOLOGISES. United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, May 1. The "Chronicle" is organising a special fund for a memorial to the Titanic's engineers and also for tho benefit of the orphans. A Washington message says that Senator Smith, at the Titanic inquiry, tion apologised to Mr Low© for his question regarding the latter's sobriety. He added that he did not intend to cast any reflection, and his use of the word "intemperate" had been interpreted to refer to habits instead of temper. THE RECOVERED BODIES. A Halifax message says that £IO,OOO has been found on the various bodies recovered from the Titanic wreck. A SENSITIVE TOWN.
A New York message says that the town of Jsmay, lowa, is taking steps to alter its name in consequence of the criticisms addressed to the head of tho White Star Line in connection with the Titanic inquiry. Tho rnhabitants are contemplating renaming the town Butt, Aster or Strauss.
THE RELIEF FUNDS. (Received May 2, 11.25 p.m.) LONDON, May 2. The relief funds total £322,000, including the women's fund of £42,000. THE SENATE'S INQUIRY. AN AMERICAN PROTEST. (Received May 3, 12.50 a.m.) WASHINGTON, May 2. Senator Works, a Californian member, protested in tho Senate against Senator Smith's methods of investigation. He said that the Titanic was manned by British subjects, who were answerablo to British law. The Government had gone to unwarrantable lengths. What the Senate ought to know could be ascertained in a few hours.
