GR AIN AND FLOUR. LONDON, April 12. The English wheat markets are firm though inactive, liberal shipments being counteracted by a good Continental demand and unfavourable reports of the American crop. A New South Wales January shipment sold’ at 395. Two Australian cargoes sold at 386 9d and 38s 7Jd respectively. Holders aro asking 40s for South Australian off coast and 39s 3d for Victorian March ship-
ment; 39s 6d has been paid-for near Parcels and 38s 3d for April shipment. There is a quiet demand for Australian on spot at 41s 6d and 425. Supplies are small. New Zealand 39s and 39s 6d.
Flour.—The market is firm and there is a fair demand. ' Oats.—The market is firm and unchanged. Peas.—Tho market is quiet. New Zealand average quality 36s 6d and 38s Gd, fine 39s and 39s 6d.
Beans.—Nominal; 37s 6d, 395. WOOL.
At the wool sales 11,884 bales were offered, a very miscellaneous selection. There was a good attendance and the market was firm with no quotable change from the first scries. English buyers wero operating freely in crossbreds. Continental buyers were more interested'in merinos. Butter—The market is very dull. There is a restricted demand for colonial owing to the prospect of European supplies shortly. It is estimated that 100,000 boxes have accumulated in London, mainly owing to reduced consumption through the strike. Choicest Australian ll6s to 118 s, unsalted 120 s, New Zealand 120 s, unsalted 1225; Cheese.—The market is steady and unchanged. "■ MELBOURNE. April 12. Wheat—4s per bushel; flour, £8 Ids per ton. Oats—Algerian, feeding, 3s Id to 3s 4d. per bushel; seeding, 3s 5d to 3s 9d. Barley—English, nominal, 6s to 6s 4d per bushel; Cape, 4s 10d to 5s 3d. Maize—4s 3d.per bushel. Bran—£6 per ton. Pollard—£6 10s per ton. Potatoes—£7 8s per ton. Onions—£9 15s per ton.

HIGH COMMISSIONER’S* REPORT. .[Pxb Pbbss Association.l • WELLINGTON, April 11. The High Commissioner’s cabled report, dated London, April 11, says that the second series of wool sales has commenced. , There is a large attendance of buyers, who show a disposition to operate very freely. The American demand is chiefly for light-conditioned coarse cross-breds. The market is firm for all descriptions at J;he January Tates, and prospects are favourable. There are 120,300 bales of New Zealand wool available. The estimated value of New Zealand wools at the close of the first series of colonial wool sales in London, held on January 3, 1912, was as follows:—Superior merino, Is to Is did per lb; medium merino, 91d to lid; inferior merino, ,74d to 9d; fine crossbreds, all grades, llld to Is lid; medium cross-breds, 8d to 10id; coarse cross-breds, all grades, 7d to lOd.
Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Sristchurch, have received the followt cable messages from their London office, dated London, April 11 Wool sales opened to-day with a fair selection. There was a good attendance of buyers, and competition was animated.. As compared with closing rates of last series, fine and medium cross-breds | are unchanged, coarse cross-breds are par to 6 per cent advance, and gVeasy and scoured merinoes are unchanged, ffho frozen meat market is firm, but .'prices are unchanged. Last week’s Quotations were:—Prime Canterbury mutton 4Jd, North Island 3Jd; prime Canterbury lamb ojd, North Island s^d; prime ox beef, forequarters 3id, hindquarters 4d. The Bank of _ New Zealand has received the following cablegram from its 'London office: “The sales have opened with strong competition and large attendance of buyers.. There is good demand for all kinds*’of cross-bred wool, total net quantity New Zealand available 120,000 bales. Prices show slight improvement compared with average of last sales. The market is strong for all, kinds of cross-breds; prices are higher par to 5 per cent.” The National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand, Limited, has received the following cablegram from its London office:—“Wool Sales— Merinoes and cross-breds generally opened firm on a par with last sale’s closing rates. .Crossbreds, coarse l —there is a hardening tendency in the market. There is a large attendance of buyers bud some American competition.” 1 The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile . Agency Company, Limited, has received the following cablegram from London:—“ London Wool Sales.— {There was a full attendance at the opening of the sales to-day, competition by Home and Continental buyers Deing active. Prices, as compared with preceding series ruled in sellers favour for crossbred; merino unchanged, opening catalogues were representative! 'America operating.” Messrs A. H. Turnbull and Co. have Received tho following cablegram from Messrs Weddel and Co., Limited:—■ Butter —Danish 112 s, New Zealand first grade salted 121 s, unsalted 1235. Market—Good demand for best qualities. No demand for secondary qualities. Cheese—New Zealand first grade white 735, coloured 73s fid, market steady. Wool—Good competition for merino tad fine crossbreds and medium crossjtred wool; market firm. Coarse crossbred wool has gone up par to 5 per tent.
