FIFTY YEARS AGO.
(From tho "Lyttelton Times” of Saturday, April 12, 1862.)
Tho gentlemen of tho Christchurch Rowing Club took their usual weekly trip to Sumner on Saturday last. -As this is our first notice of the above-men-tioned club, we take this opportunity of congratulating our young friends on the introduction, of .so healthy and manly a means of recreation. We wish the club all success, and trust that its list of members may rapidly increase.
The Elections.—The only districts which a fford the prospect, of a contested election up to the present time are those of the city of Christchurch and Rangiora. In the former there are seven candidates in the field to contest four seats; in the latter two have come forward to dispute the single representation of the district. Lyttelton seems to be perfectly apathetic about the matter, only one candidate, Mr Buckley, having publicly announced his intention of standing for the town.
