NEIV ZEALAND COUNCIL
| A meeting of the committee of the New Zealand Boxing Council was held on Thursday evening. C. F. Herbert, holder of the heavyweight professional championship, wrote that he had decided not to defend the title.
The secretary reported that on receipt of Herbert’s letter he had immediately communicated with the Wnipukurau, Hawke’s Bay, Wan-, ganui and Greymouth Associations, all of which had expressed willingness to carry out the proposed match between Herbert and A. B. Ireland. On Easter Monday Ireland and J. Mitchell had met at Millerton and ' Mitchell had won on points. It was decided that the title should revert to Mitchell, from whom Herbert had won it. The Greymouth Association wrote that a return match had been arranged between Mitchell and Ireland, to take place at Greymouth. on May 18, and requested that the contest should be for the heavy-weight championship. The application was granted. The Timaru Association wrote that a match had been arranged between J. Hagerty and F. Ellis, to take place at Timaru on April 24, and requested that, as there was no professional feather-weight champion in the dominion, the match should carry the i championship in the class. Tlio application was granted. Correspondence was received from a competitor who had been recently suspended asking for a reduction in the term of suspension, and. furnishing statements in supnort of his request. It was decided that the Council had no jurisdiction in the matter, and to forward the application to the Suspending Association. Tr. M. Griffin wrote that, ns the result of his recent contest with A. B. Ireland, at Waipawa, he- was forced to tie conclusion that he must retire permanently from the ring. , It was decided to forward Griffin’s letter to the Christchurch Sports Club. Correspondence on 'the matter was received from the Waipukurnu Association, covering a resolution passed by the committee of that body to the effect that recent experiences had conclusively proved it was unwise to per- ' mit Griffin to appear in tire ring as a ' nrincipil. Tho Council secretary reported that ho had forwarded a communication on tho subject to all local associations. ■ It was decided to strike off tho Horowhenua Association from the list of affiliated bodies. The secretary of the hew South Wales Sports Club wrote that the Australasian championships would take piano earlv iu September. Tho Northern Association wrote asking if a person forfeited his amateur •status bv accepting payment for acting as referee; end if in the opinion of the Council he did, that the Council should give favourable consideration to ! an replication for reinstatement from i Mr. T.Brown who had taken a fee for . acting ns referee.
