Belgium enjoys the distinction of having been the first Continental nation to establish a railway. Tho pioneer lino between M alines and Brussels was opened in 1835, and now, out of a'total of 2890 miles of track in tho country, tho State is tho owner of 2530 miles, its system, proportionately to aroa, being the largest in the ! world. The Belgian Government also ' maintains its own steamship service ' between Dover and Ostend, and its fleet has always included the fastest Channel steamships. Groat works are at tho present time in progress at Ostend for the further development of all connections via Dover,
