Of all the vegetables- which furnish nourishment to man, the banana is tin most prolific. A single cluster often contains from 160 to 180 pods, and weighs from sixty to eighty pounds. Humboldt says that a piece of land of 120 square yards will produce 4000 pounds’ weight of fruit, while the sam* area will rarely produce more thaj, thirty pounds’ weight of meal, aa eighty pounds of potatoes.
