LYTTELTON STEVEDORES. Favoured by beautiful weather, the annual picnic of the Lyttelton stevedores, held yesterday, was a most successful and enjoyable event. The picnio party, numbering about a thousand, went by special train to Rnngiora and spent tho day in tho Domain. A programme of sports occupied tho whole day, and there was no lack of competition for tho various events. Derry’s Band accompanied tho party. Tho Oarlyls Implement Works’ annual picnic took place at Governor's Bay on Saturday. About two hundred peoplo were present, and a very pleasant day was spent. Ritchie 2. Ladies’ Chain Stopping Competition—Mias Ludbrook 1, Miss Bolt 2. Young Ladies’ Race—Miss Williams 1, Miss Douglas 2. Nail Driving Competition—Mrs J. Patterson 1, Mrs R. Thompson 2.' A foaturo of the events was the faot that the winner of the chain-stopping competition stepped the_ exact distance, 66ft, the second being only 1$ inches short. The annual picnio of tho employees of the Fairfiold Freezing Works was held at Timaru on Saturday., Although the morning was threatening, with » slight shower just as tho train was leaving, tho party numbered about 70A. On arriving at Tim am gain fell for about an hour, but then cleared, and tho afternoon was fairly fine. A sports programme was carried out on the beach at Caroline Bay, and the picknickers arrived back at Ashburton shortly after eight o’clock. The Ashburton Temperance Brass Bond accompanied tho excursion.
