Acceptances for tho first day of the'New Brighton Trotting Cub's meeting will close to-night at eight o'clock. Tho stewards of the Dunedin Jockey Club met after the Abbotsford Welter Handicap on Saturday to inquire into a complaint by Mr W. T. Hazlett. the owner of Directoire, that J. Bcale, the rider of Obolus, had interfered with hie mare. The stewards suspended Beale for "hree months and also cautioned him as to his future behaviour. Fisticuff was making his first appearance in a jumping race when ho won the Owhiro Hurdle Handicap, at Wingatui cm Saturday. He had his first schooling at Oamaru a few weeks ago. and in his earliest efforts he showed great proficiency as a hurdler. When racing on the flat Fisticuff showed a lot of pace but could not stay further than six ff.rlnngs In winning a mile and a' half hurdle race, however, he has shown once more that horses which quickly tiro on the flat, mav readilv get to the end of a long course with obstacles to be jumped. Fisticuff wr.;; bred bv Mr H. A. Knight, and was purchased not long ago by Mr J. Buckley with a special view to being tried over hurdles. . , T ~ Lupulite. who won the Flying Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday, is ar. eight-year-old geldino- by Lupin, from Ma Belle, ft mare who docs not find a place in tho Stud Book, but who is by St Clair— Tangi Moid 11. A few vears ago Lupulite was one of the foremost sprinters in the South Island, but I he has been on tho down grade for some 1 time, and his form this season prior to I Saturday's race, has been very poor. Two of the winners at Wingatui on batur--1 day wero sired bv stallions imported m 1902 j by' tho Government, Fisticuff being by Singlestick 11.. and Lupulite by Lupin. Go'd Sril. who raced prominently at \\ mgatui last week, though without winning a race, is an eight-venr-old gelding by Verseilles, who is bv Chainshot, bv Musket-Locke., from Yono. bv Cadoean-Wavr. Gold Band tho dam of Gold Sail, is not m the Stud Book. It was not. till he was a five-year-old that Gold Sail commenced racing, and during tho present season he h»s more than once shown attractive form in Southland over short courses. Routine, the winner of the Dunedin 'Jockov Club' Handicap on Saturday, has ! reached the veteran stage, as she is nine years old. She is by Sir Lancelot, by Dreadnought—ldalia, her dam. Quo™ °J Trumps, tiding bv l.eolinus—Maid of Atnol. Routine was not raced till she was a four-year-old. and since then eho has not been verv severelv taxed in public. In May of . last year she won the Ashburton Cup, and I tho had, prior to Saturday, already shown a partiality for Wingatui by winning the Otazo,, Handicap there on Boxing Day. Routine has a very unenviable reputation for playing up at the start of her races, and this i bus frequently ruined her chance of success. Outlandcr has raced very unluckily of late. At the summer meeting of the Canterbury Jockev Club ho finished second to Mumura in the Midsummer Handicap, while last week he filled a similar placo behind Parable in the Dunedin Cup and behind Routine in the Dunedin Jcckey Club Handicap. | The Cornet secur.ed the unsatisfactory j honour of third place in the principal handicap each day of tho Dunedin Jockey Club s meeting last week. | Ngatapa. by St Ambrose—Ambush, who 1 won the Hopeful Stakes at Wingatui on 1 Saturday, is a two-year-old half-brother to i Boresina. tho winner" of the Oakleigh Plate ■at Caulfield in 1907. Ngatapa. was bred at | Elderslie by Mr J. B. Reid. who sent him to Sydney for the yearling sales last Easter. Tho colt" did net find a purchaser, and Mr Reid had him (mined for a time nt Randwick, after which he returned to New Zealand and was placed under the care of M. Hobbs at Riccarton. A few weeks aao he started in tho Middle Park Plate, but ran badly. In his engagements last week ho was meeting moderate opposition, but he ran two upelul races, showing a lot of pace. I Waikaraka, who wen two races at Winga- ! tui last week, is an eight-year-old gelding by i tho New Zealand Cup winner Waiuku, from j Mistra, a sister to Galatea, Teredo. Cynisca 1 and Pygmalion, by Apremont—Nautilus. WaiIkaraka'did his early racing in the North I Island, and it was not, till he was supposed I to have pa=sed his best days that ha drifted to Southland.
Homo Rule, by Wairiki —Eton Lass, who wen the Warren" Hurdle Handicap on the first day of the Yictoria Amateur Turf Club's meeting, was purchased a short time ago by Wr J. Loughlin, who was formerly -a jockey, trainer, owner and bookmaker in turn in New Zealand, and who is now a prominent bookmaker in Sydney. Home Rule, with other horses owned by Mr Loughlin, is trained by T. C'ahill, a former resident of Riccarton. Popinjay, who won the Caulfield Futurity Stakes on Saturday, was one of the smartest, two-year-olds seen out in Australia in the early part of last season. He only won one race, a handicap at Randwick. but he ran second in the Breeders' Plate and Maribyruong: Plate and ' third in the Gimcrack Stakes. This season ho finished third in the Caulfield Guineas and subsequently won ths Linlithgow Stakes nt the Melbourne Cup' meeting. He is handicapped at Bst 91b in the Newmarket Handicap, to be decided next Saturday. Desire, who wan tho Launceston Cup. is also engaged in the NewmarketHandicap, in which his weight, including a 71b penalty, is 7st lllb. Comedy King won the Futurity . Stakes two years ago and last year finished third to Blairgour and Broadsword.
