CROQUET.
Tlio Canterbury Croquet Association had very favourable weather for the second day of its tournament yesterday morning. The lawns were drier, and, having been rolled since tho previous day’s play, were fairly fast In tho Club Pairs Mr Butterworth again excelled hiiusolf, showing what it was possible for a strong player to do m partnershin with one much weaker than himself. He secured: two victories with Mrs Midgley against two pairs of really strong opponents. In the Championship Singles the first round was completed. J. AY. Joynt defeated Miss Gerard after a very long game, and Macfarlano beat Miss Cosset. Miss Cosset, who was six hoops behind, had to peg out one of Macfarlane’s rovers, but he finessed for position And hit tho winning peg wijli a magnifleont long shot. Tho remaining game in the rotind, Laurie v. AY. White (Timaru) resulted in a good fight, with Laurie victor. In the second round: Murrny-Aynsley beat Pgnn by four points. In division B there were some excellent games, Miss Parsons, a verv promising young player, defeating in turn Mrs Johnson and Mr 3 Denham, tho game with Mrs Denham being a very hardfought one. Miss Parsons will meet Williams to-morrow in the final, and a very closo game should rosult. • In the Ladies’ Championship Miss Rutherford and Miss Smith beat Mrs Hobbs and Miss Crawshaw after some excellent games. The defeat of Mrs Pinckney by Miss Budd was a very fine game. Miss Budd had. one ball pegged 1 out, but ran the rover hoop with the survivor, and running back through tho hoop, hit the winning peg. A very fine game was witnessed between Butterworth and Penn in tho first division of the Handicap Singles. Butterworth exhibited very high skill and strategy, and was also in very good shooting, and obtained a long lead in the early part of the gamo, from which Penn recovered' a good dead later, and after an exciting and interesting gamo Butterworth proved tho winner. This was quite tho best game of tho day, and probably of the tournament. Nine players are still left in the championship, and by the defeat of Mrs Pearce the final is very uncertain.
