THE ZOO AT WAINONI.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—Tour correspondent “Safe or Sorry ” is evidently under the impression that Mr J. J. Boyd has been requested by the authorities to remove his zoo from Aramoho. Far from this being the case, the presence of the animals there has made welcome revenue for tho municipal trams and brought the little town into dominion-wide prominence. Mr Boyd and his sons intend to run three zoos, one in Aramoho, one in Onehunga and one at Wainoni Park, thus forming the first zoo' in the South Island. To preclude all possibility of escape the cages are being constructed from the strongest materials, with jjin iron bars in front, and are modelled from the plans of the London Zoo. I feel sure that if “ Safe or Sorry ” will visit Wainoni Park an inspection of the cages will convince him that there is less risk of his losing his life from an escaped animal than there is from being gored by a stray bull. In all parts of the world the educative value of zoological gardens is recognised, and in Wellington the City Council annually vote large sums for additions and improvements to the Newtown Zoo, Instead of the zoo there driving away population there are residences being built close up to the park fence;—T am, etc., W. H. BICKERTON. Wainoni Park, September 8.
