STATE GRANTS AND BENEFACTIONS. ; PROPOSALS FOR CURRENT YEAR. [Fr.oii Our Correspondent.] j WELLINGTON. September 8. The printing of “Hansard” is estimated at £4OOO. Last year it cost £7055, consequent on the unduly long session. A bonus of £SOOO is provided for mineral oil, and an estimate-of £IOOO for tho Mines Commission. . A grant of £75 is" to he given to tho i Christchurch Society for the Protection i of Women, and Children. A grant of £450 is again made for . the Salvation Army’s prison gate work. Last year’s grant of £6OO to twelve > Plunket nurses is not reinstated this i year: i A now item for £l5O reads:—“ Grant for management of red deer in deer ; forests.” . The usual grant of £3OO is made to ■ the Swimming Association for the encouragement of swimming. An item of £IOOO is 6et aside for wireless telegraph apparatus. A grant of £I2OO appears towards the cost of the Terra Nova’s coastal soundings. The usual grants for specialisation at the four colleges include £2OOO for the Canterbury College engineering department. The development of State coal mines last year cost £27,051. Tliis year a sum of £30,000 is estimated. A sum of £4OO is provided as a. refund of legal expenses incurred by the Norwegian. Government for the defence of Anders Anderson, in connection with his trial in the Westport murder case. Rewards and expenses for the suppression of sly grog-selling and the introduction of liquor into prohibited areas amounted to £853 last year. A sum of £B6O is estimated for tho current year. A sum of £l2O is provided for renovations at the Christchurch police station, £225 for the Timaru police station for drainage and fire appliances, £260 for the Culverden post office site, and £l6O for latrines at Ashburton post office. The expenses of the rifle team at Briley are set down at £1650, the passages and expenses of cadets attending tho Australian Military College, including pay, at £2OOO. election year, a sum of £24,000 is estimated for the general election, £12,000 for the licensing poll, £BOO for the expenses of representation Commissioners a.nd £IOO for Lioensing Committee elections. The cost of preParation of the rolls is set down at £23,000. I or the Dofenco Department there is a considerable increase, the estimates tor this year totalling £384,574, as against £205,269 last* year, the difference being largely due to the salaries paid to the new staff. It also includes a new item of £3500 for medical fees, for examination, £50,000 for tho supply of uniforms, badges and greatcoats, and £12,000 for accoutrements. A_ pound for pound subsidv of £4O is given for improving tho Flaxbourne Domain Road. A sum of £3O is reinstated for acquiring a road to a forest reserve at Hanmer. A subsidy of £25 is given for improvements to the Ashley t or S° Domain, and a subsidy of £SO for fencing and planting at Culverden. A subsidy of £SO is given for the Lyttelton and Heathcote Domain, and a grant of £IOO for improvements at Little River is reinstated. Last year’s unspent grant of £2OO for replanting the New Brighton Domain is also reinstated, as well as the Probbleton subsidy of £SO. Among other subsidies reinstated are £243 for Scarborough Domain, Sumner; £SOO for the purchase of a domain at Upper Riccorton, and £l9B for improvements at Woolston.
