COUNCILLORS AT HOCKEY.
A DRAWN GAME,
Though the hockey match between the members of the Christchurch City Council and Waimairi County Council, played at Lancaster Park yesterday afternoon, did' not attract quite so large an attendance as was expected, those who did attend thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The members of both these august bodies took the field with valour and abandon, and very few alterations had to be made in tho personnel of the teams as published. The players donned jerseys of divers colours, tho Waimairi contingent affecting black and red hoops, while tho City Fathers appeared in tasteful suits of black and white, with the exception of two councillors who struck pleasing and original notes in the scheme of decoration by appearing in black and yellow and sky-blue and black respectively. The teams arrived on tho field in a couple of drags, each drawn by four prancing greys, and both outfits received an ovation. The brief interval of waiting ■ before the match was occupied by many members of the City Council team in endeavouring to elucidate from bystanders, mostly as ignorant as themselves, some hazy notion as to the theory of- the game. It was . apparent, however, when the game really started, that they knew more about jt than their modesty would permit them to claim. ‘ The match was played in four spalls, each of ten minutes’ duration. City Council won the. toss, and elected to have the sou’-wester at their backs. Waimairi were attacking throughout the first spell, and Walter and Cleland distinguished themselves by bold and dashing play. A. S. Taylor, Cooper, Morris and W. R. Smith, however, played a sound defensive game, and were ably backed up by tho rest of the City Council team. Tho spell ended without a score. W. R. Smith was struck on the shoulder, and the Ambulance- Brigade had to render first aid. The councillor, however, was soon himself again, and his vigorous throw-ing-in was thereafter quite a feature of the game: In the second spell the City Council made a brave rally, headed by Taylor, and Waimairi, with Walter in the van. responded by an attack which nearly ended in a goal. Burgoyne did some good defensive work at this stage, but Waimairi were not to bo denied, and kept play within their opponents’ circle. Sorensen, at goal, had a hard tussle to prevent a score, and staved off disaster for some minutes. Then a determined rush, in which many Waimairi players were prominent, ended in a goal for the attabkers. Waimairi, .1; City, 0. In the third spell City played like giants refreshed, and, after attacking hotly for five minutes or so, Taylor soared with a long shot. Waimairi, 1; City, 1. Play was even for tho rest of tho spell, Millar, Hunter,. W. R. Smith and Morris doing good work for City, while the two Sharpes,' Bosomworth . and Hawke strove valiantly for Waimairi. Tho spell ended without a further score. The fourth spell saw Waimairi attacking hotly again, but the City representatives drove them off with long shots for tho line. The game ended in a draw, each side having scored a goal. Mr L. Cusworth was referee, and Misses D. Saunders, and D. Pearce acted as line umpires. The use of the ground was given free of charge by the Lancaster Park Board of Control. A collection taken on tho ground in aid of the King George Memorial Home realised over £B.
