DOMESTIC SERVICE.
—_«—i— HOW TO SETTLE THE PROBLEM. [From Our Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, August 4. Tho domestic servant problem was commented upon by the Hon J. Barr in the course, of a speech in the Legislative Council this afternoon. Ho remarked that at a meeting hold in Auckland to form a domestic servants' union it had been stated that hundreds of girls were looking for work, but could not get it. He did not know much about Auckland conditions, but | if tho statement were to bo taken as i referring also to Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, he could only say it was ridiculous nonsense. His ex-, perionce was that there was a very widespread call for domestic help, but bringing girls from England would not solve tho problem. They must begin : in tho schools by educating girls properly for the duties of housewives. It I was necessary to induce girls to come out here for domestic service, but great care must be taken to select only girls suitable for New Zealand conditions. The conditions on tho boats wore not always what thoy should be, ' and if young girls wero to ho encouraged to com© out the Government must soo that they were protected on the way. (Hear, hear.) If something like this wero not done it would bo far better to stop tho whole thing, i (Hear, hear.)
