IMMIGRATION.
VICTORIA’S EFFORTS. United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, Slay 17
The Hon W. L. Baillieu, the Victorian Minister of Public Works, in an interview, eulogised the emigration work that had been done by Mr Willis, who was about to return to Victoria. The applications received during Mr Willis’s term of office represented 4100. possessing £250,000, of whom 2435, with a capital of £192.000, have sailed or have booked their passages. Mr Baillieu looks forward to a rapidly increasing volume of new settlers : but it will be necessary, he adds, to organise, to spend money in effective advertising, and to secure more shipping accommodation. Personally, Mr Baillieu thinks that it is unnecessary to insist on taking people with capital. If laud should be made available on easy terms every healthy man would add to the country’s prosperity.
