ART SOCIETY
The Council of the Canterbury Art Society, having learned that one of its oldest members, Mr A. W. Walsh, had decided to leave Christchurch to make his home in Auckland, met on Saturday evening to show its appreciation "of his work during the years he had resided in Christchurch. The president, Mr W. Recce, in presenting to Mr Walsh a field-glass and travelling rug as slight tokens of the esteem in winch he was held., said ! Mr Walsh was not likely to be soon forgotten in Canterbury, as the many i students who had oassed through his I hands at the School of Art would alI ways remember his genial nature and , kindly manner, while at the same time : h? inculcated a .strict adherence to the i true principles of art, and fine examples of Ins own work might be found iu many homes. As a member of the Council' Mr Walsh had always been ready to give generously of his time and experience in the interests of art gonerallv. Mr Recce expressed the belief that now Mr Walsh intended devoting tho whole of his time to painting, his work, which in the past had been for its truthful delineation ana painstaking character. would in the future reveal more of that soulfulness and strength which they know lie possessed. In conclusion. Mr Recce dwelt upon the pergonal charm of the friend they were losing, and wished him n very bright career. Mr J. Jamie-son, ox-president, and several members expressed their regret at losing Mr Walsh from their midst. Mr Walsh, after having responded to the kind wishes and. expressed his thanks for the handsome souvenirs given him, said that if any stronger incentive than his great love for his profession were needed., it would be found in the fact that the eyes of his old colleagues in the Society and his i Christchurch friends were upon him, '
and ho would do his utmost to realist tho faith expressed that evening thai he would do greater things in th« future.
