THE CANAL.
TO THE EDITOa. Sir, —While fully endorsing the views of Mr Joshua Little and " Sumner Resident," I would like to call attention to another little work which could he done at small cost, the same being part of the canal scheme. There is a small stream which cuts off the Shag Rock from the shore. If this wore filled in with material from the point it would make the Toad wider at a dangerous bend, and would give visitors access to the good fishing round the rock. Also, it would serve as an approach for the tramway bridge to the rv T ew Brighton side in the near future. Further, it would materially assist, in the winter promenade beach which is rapidly being formed all along the foreshore from Shag Rock point to the .ietty, and which promises to be a valuable asset to Sumner, being sheltered from all southerly winds by the high cliffs, and which in time will admit of the tramway being moved further away from them. —I am, etc., OBSERVER.
