Leonard Shaw, a labourer, aged twenty-three years, who accidentally shot himself in the foot -while rabbit shooting at Plimmerton on Christmas Day, died in the hospital today.. WELLINGTON, January 11. Bolton Street cemetery' was the scene of-a sensational tragedy this afternoon. About half-past three o’clock two lady visitors to the cemetery received a shock bv observing a man lying on a bank in" a prominent portion of tae grounds with blood flowing freely from a wound in his head. Information given to a passer-by enabled the police to appear quickly on the spot. . Investigation by Constable Snow disclosed the body of a man fully_dressed. Near bis right hand lay a loaded seven-cham-bered revolver, one- chamber.of which had been discharged. Ho was quite dead. There was a.bullet wound in the roof of the mouth. A pendant attached to deceased’s . watch and chain bore this inscription: *‘R. Styles, Haw era A.S.R.S., New Zealand, February, 1907.” The initials stand for Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. There was a letter ‘‘ To my wife, Maggie Styles:, Guildford Terrace.” Deceased was a guard on the ’Wellington-Auckland express.section of railway. He was between forty and fifty years of age, married, with one child. The body, which was removed to the morgue, whore it awaits an inquest to-morrow, was subsequently identified by railway employees as that of Robert T. Styles, a well-known guard. No cause so far has been assigned for the deed. TIMARU, January 10. The body of a newly born male infant was found in a small garden enclosure in . the middle of the borough. No clue has yet been found as to the child’s parents. DUNEDIN, January 10. Advice was received to-day by the secretary of the Itise avid Shine Dredging Company of the sudden death of George Todd, a diver who was working in connection with the company’s No. 2 dredge, which sank last week. It appears that Todd was making an inspection of the dredge, and after he had been down a considerable time those on the surface found that be gave no answer to signals. He was then pulled up, but was found to be dead. GORE, January 10.
At AVaikaia on Sunday afternoon a shearer named Maurice Constant Sclilonback was drowned while bathing in the AVaikaia River, opposite the Argyle Station- He got beyond his depth, and was swept, into a hole by an under current. The body was recovered, and at the inquest to-day a verdict of accidental death by drowning was returned.' The deceased was thirty years of age.
A man named Grigor was admitted to the Hospital last evening, suffering from 'a fractured log. sustained when he was loading a dray with'bags of bran. The young man named Ryan who was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital on Monday evening suffering from injuries to his head, the result of falling down a companion-way on the ss. Avootton, was operated upon in the evening. He was still unconscious yesterday morning, and no information was available as to his identity beyond tlie fact that Ills surname was known to be Ryan.
