Alfred George Marshall, M.A., tho nominee of the Professorial Board of Auckland University College, was today elected New Zealand Rhodes, Scholar for 1911. The other candidates who presented themselves before the Board of Selection were David S. Smith, L.L.B. (Victoria College) and Montague Ongley (Otago University). The Board met at Government House, the members present being as follows: —His Excellency the Governor, Sir Robert Stout, Mr Justice Cooper and Professors H. B. Kirk (Victoria College), A. P. AV. Thomas (Auckland University College), W. H. Gabbatt (Canterbury College) and P. Marshall (.Dunedin University). Mr Marshall, the new Rhodes Scholar, is twenty-two years of age. He was born in Northern Wairoa, and is a son of the Rev G. Marshall, Methodist minister at Otautau, in Southland. An “all-round man,” such as the founder of the scholarship wished to benefit, Mr Marshall has had a most successful career both as a scholar a.nd an athlete. in his application to the Board, Mr Marshall stated that he had followed the Now Zealand course of education from the primary school to the university, supporting liimselt entirely from tho age of sixteen years by means of scholarships and demonstratorships, and winning finally the degree of M.A., with first class honours in mathematics and mathematical physics. The professor of mathematics at Auckland University College says ot Air Marshall:—“His work has impressed me particularly by its extreme thoroughness and accuracy. Though i have had several students who have been very successful in my subject, 1 have had none with minds more severely logical and penetrating.” Other professors under whom Mr Marshall has studied at Auckland have written of him in a similar complimentary strain, reference being made to his menial alertness, quite unusual ability, general high character and engaging personality.
Apart from his scholastic successes, Mr Marshall has been prominent in the cadet movement-. He has held a high place in Association focibali in Auckland, has represented the University College with success in two New Zealand University athletic tournaments, and has gained fame as a high jumper in open competitions.
