PUBLIC HOLIDAYS ACT.
[Pi:a Pbjsss Association.] AUCKLAND, December 13. The vexed question of whether or not Monday,.December "(i, is to be kept as a holy day or a holiday has put the Auckland Racing Club in a quandary. At a meeting of the committee to-night it was decided to hold the meeting on the dates originally fixed. viz.,' December 2(i and 29 and .January 2 and 3, provided that trains are running as usual on December 26 and that the Minister of Internal Affairs issues a totalisator permit for that day.
There being some doubt in the minds of many business people us to whether the Public Holidays Act, recently parsed, would come into operation before Christinas, Mr Ff. Broadhead. .secretary of. the Canterbury Employers' Association, wrote last week to the Minis-ter-of Labour on tho-subject, and on .Monday received tho following telegram in reply:—" Regret, your letter 6th irist. overlooked. Public Holidays Act came into force on being assented l\v liia Excellency." The iirst holidays to be affected by tho new .statute will he Christmas Day and January 1. Ft is enacted that wherever these! days are provided for as holidays in any Act or in any award or industrial agreement, and t,)icy happen to fall mi a Sunday, they must he observed on tho following Monday.
