EXCURSION TICKETS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Recognising that in some matters the Minister for Railways is in tho hands of his expert it must, nevertheless, be seen that the Railway Department is far from progressive in the matter of encouraging holiday traffic outside the church festivals and the racing seasons. Indeed, for many years the "' bookie" has been better treated than the teacher on our railways. In the country districts many iu the scholastic profession have to take their holidays when the committee and, Providence pass votes for harvesting. The Union Steam Ship Company has generously, and I think profitably, given concessions to these teachers, who have by the Railway Department been placed at a, disadvantage. There are numbers in other walks of life, who. as stated by Mr D. Lumsden. have to take their holidays at the end of the excursion season.' There has been no serious attempt to make excursions popular and paying since Sir Julius Vogel s at. tempts in 1881-7. Mr Lumsden, .>nT. E. Taylor and yourself deserve our thanks, and we look for greater success in the near future.—l am, etc., TALUS.
